J. M. Coetzee’s parody Foe reimagines the slave character Friday from its original version in
Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe. In your essay discuss the character of Friday. Why is Coetzee’s
Friday mute? Elaborate on the significance of his muteness especially in relation to issues of
voice, agency, language, civilizing mission, and colonialism
