MOVIE: Fire Island
In this Collaborative Activity, we aren’t going to parse the shots the director uses or discuss the character development in a rich way (although you are allowed to mention those things, of course). Instead, I want to explore the fan reaction and response Fire Island elicited (and what better way to do so in 2022 than a BuzzFeed list of tweets?).
Read through what these fans have posted, and how a theme that develops is that Fire Island filled some perceived lack in the landscape of queer film. This lack seems to be related to the concept of queer joy– that is, that the story of queerness is often told as struggle, oppression, marginalization, and “Otherness,” but that there is also great joy in being queer! Fans seem to be expressing, in different ways, that there has been a real lack of queer joy on American screens, and that Fire Island is bringing that in an interesting way that both pulls on classic tropes and narratives (Pride & Prejudice) and explores new, intersectional ways of looking at kinship and joy.
Your post this week has a more open-ended prompt: What did you think of Fire Island and queer joy? Here are some things you can address, though you don’t need to address them all:
1. In what ways is Fire Island trying to bring a positive experience of queer spectatorship to its viewer, rather than a challenging experience (like some of the New Queer Cinema might do) or a traumatizing experience (like some of the “torture-porn” biopics such as Boys Don’t Cry might do), or a “heartwarming” experience (such as a Love, Simon might do)?
2. Do you find the queer joy of Fire Island feels authentic? How so?
3.How did watching Fire Island make you feel?
4. What do the people posting the tweets in this list think? What do they seem to be speaking to?
5.What’s up with queer joy? What is productive about it? Should we create space for more of it?
Post one post of at least 200 words that explores any aspect of Fire Island and queer joy. Then, Post short responses (at least 50 words) to TWO of your peers in the class. You’ll complete a total of THREE posts by the end of class.
Bonus points and mad respect if you can engage in QUEER JOY while you post about it– share joyful experiences of your own if they resonate with your response to the film, give classmates positive affirmations or respond from a place of joy as you react to their work… not forcing you to be happy, but what if we all talked about and tried to manifest JOY for the next hour or so?????? What would that do, politically? (And if I’ve just gone too “woo-woo” for you, feel free to just stick to the basics in your response).
