Visit the Norton Simon Museum during the semester and take a selfie in front of piece of art from a culture and period covered in our class;
and write a paragraph analyzing the artwork using information discussed in our class.
Please address which period/style the artwork you took your selfie with likely belongs to and why you think it belongs to that period.

Course Description
This course provides an overview of Western art from the 14th through 17th centuries. We will
examine a variety of media ranging from painting to printmaking to architecture. Our goal will
be to examine objects’ and monuments’ original functions within their social, religious and
political contexts in order to gain a greater understanding of the cultures that created them. You
will also be introduced to the vocabulary and methodological approaches of art history, enabling
you to discuss analytically visual material. Careful reading of historical texts and scholarly
essays will serve to guide our studies.
Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs)
1. Describe and analyze major artworks, historic styles and techniques from the Early
Renaissance through the Baroque period in Western Europe.
2. Critically examine and evaluate written material, lecture material, and artists’ work.
3. Critique and evaluate forms, functions, and interrelationships of art and culture.
