select a piece of legislation that you
find directly relevant to one of the primary texts of Zoë
Wicomb, Nadine Gordimer, Mahasweta Devi, Layli Long Soldier, Claudia Rankine, or Leah Lakshmi
Piepzna-Samarasinha. Write a synthesis of the
legislation and the primary text in 3–4 typed double-spaced pages. How do they both approach similar
legal questions? How does one text help us to understand the other more fully? Does one text demonstrate
the limitations of the other? The essay must include a thesis statement in the introductory paragraph
clearly stating your perspective or argument on how these two texts connect, signposting in the
introductory paragraph indicating how the paper will proceed, a topic sentence in each body paragraph
that clearly states what the paragraph will be about, at least one direct quote from each text (including
introducing the quote, interpreting or explaining it, and analyzing it in terms of how it connects to your
argument & to the other text), and a conclusion paragraph which does not just repeat what the paper has
already said. You are not to use additional sources for this assignment. The legal text should be either
international (e.g., UN declarations or international resolutions, etc.), or from the same country as the
course text. You must specify in the text of your assignment which short story and which piece of
legislation you are using.
