Purpose: The purpose of the literature review is to explore
what exists in the scholarly literature
about a specific topic area. A literature review is a
thorough and comprehensive search of the
academic and professional literature about a topic.
A literature review must include information about the topic
being studied, theories that apply to
this topic, the primary areas that are discussed in the
literature about this topic, any gaps in the
literature, and a comparison and contrast of the findings.
This literature review is not merely a
“research paper” about a topic.
The literature review will become a part of the student’s
proposal. It will be submitted prior to
drafting the full proposal. Feedback will be provided to the
student and this should inform the
student’s development of their Capstone Proposal.
Guidelines: The literature review should be 25-30 (maximum
30) pages in length (not including
cover page, abstract, and reference page). This assignment
will require significant time and is
not a simple process. The literature review will be composed
of the following parts:
1) Introduction
a) Introduction of the topic and explain significance
b) Current trends in the literature related to the topic
c) Major problems or challenges are identified based on what
is found in the
literature.
2) Overview of the Literature
a) Comprehensive exploration of the topic based on the
literature.
b) Information in this section should be presented in
chronological order or a
thematic representation of what is in the literature.
c) Seminal studies or content should be discussed and their
relation to the
topic should be made clear.
d) Identify researchers and writers who have done something
similar to the
topic of focus.
3) Discussion
a) Compare and contrast what was found in the literature.
b) Discuss any gaps found as a result of the comprehensive
exploration in
the body of the paper.
c) Explain why these gaps are important to an understanding
of the topic.
4) Conclusion
a) Summarize the key findings from the literature.
b) How will your topic (and approach) differ from what is
discussed in the
literature?
c) How will your topic or approach contribute to the
profession?
