Module 6 Discussion: COVID-19: How are large health care systems adapting to this current crisis?
CREATE A POST, and REPLY TO THE POST AT THE BOTTOM.
Discuss how major health care systems and public health departments are adapting their services to COVID-19. Visit Atrium Health (https://atriumhealth.org/.), Novant Health (https://novanthealth.org) and the Mecklenburg County Public Health Department (https://www.mecknc.gov/HealthDepartment/Pages/default.aspx.) websites, and review the readings for this week for more background on this topic. Do you believe these larger health care systems have been effective in their public communication about COVID-19? How has Mecklenburg County shared with the public the county’s response? What is one thing about how these large health systems have adapted that you admire and would replicate and enhance? What is one thing you think is lacking or you would revise?

Initially, major health care systems and public health departments adapted their services to COVID-19 by moving to virtual consulting and telehealth, reducing the number of staff and capacity of hospitals, and by utilizing social media to spread awareness and health education to the public during the stay-at-home order. I believe that the larger health care systems were effective in their early public communication about COVID-19 as they were able to spread information about symptom awareness, testing locations, and important statistics surrounding the virus. Mecklenburg County took to social media, printed materials, audio and video clips, and live streaming events to spread information and address the county’s response. One thing about how these large health systems responded to COVID-19 that I admire and would replicate and enhance is their ability to quickly adapt and construct a telemedicine platform for those who could not leave their homes to still access medical care. One thing that I think was lacking and I would revise going forward is the lack of financial security and personal security that many employees felt during this adaption to telemedicine. Many employees felt anxiety and fear over job loss, their physical health, their emotional health, and overall heightened stress that further leads to employee burnout and overall dissatisfaction within the hospital system.
