Students will write the Final Exam essay in the following order:
In the first paragraph: use Youth, Identity, Power chapters 1 and 2 to identify and discuss historical obstacles facing the Chicano community at the beginning of the Chicano movement in the area of higher education (colleges and universities) as whole. What were the problems that the community was forced to address? Be sure to use at least three examples from the Youth, Identity, Power text. ONE DIRECT QUOTE is required from Youth, Identity, Power chapters 1 and 2 to support your assertions.
In the second paragraph, use Youth, Identity, Power chapters 3 and 5 to discuss discuss the ideas that pushed Chicanos to create the “new” concepts of the Chicano Studies programs. Be sure to use at least three examples from the Youth, Identity, Power text. Next, using the article “Chicano Sociology” show how these programs questioned/ challenged the established myths/paradigms of Chicanos established in higher education. Be sure to use ONE DIRECT QUOTE from the article “Chicano Sociology” by Mirande to support your assertions.
In the third paragraph, use Youth, Identity, Power chapter 6 to analyze and discuss the changing of the political identity from Chicano to Hispanic and the effect it had on the Chicano movement as a whole. Be sure to talk about how the ideology of Hispanic was created, destroying the Chicano identity and then disseminated into the community. Be sure to use at least three examples from the Youth, Identity, Power text. ONE DIRECT QUOTE is required from Youth, Identity, Power chapter 6 to support your assertions.
In the fourth paragraph, use the video “Precious Knowledge” to discuss the most recent attacks on Chicano Studies in education. Be sure to discuss the gains that the program had for the students. Then, explain the arguments of those who contend that the program is “racist, anti-American” rhetoric and why it needs to be dismantled and outlawed. Be sure to use at least THREE examples from the video to back your points. ONE DIRECT QUOTE from “Precious Knowledge” must be in this paragraph to support your argument.
