Israel:

Papers should be submitted by Monday 17 October 2022.
Students should either select a topic of their own choice or one (1) theme out of three (3) below.
Papers should be 5-7 pages, using double spacing, Times New Roman font, size 12. Papers should generally focus on analysis and policy recommendations.
China and Israel/Middle East: China’s growing presence in the region. Will China assume a more active role in the region? Is the Middle East another playing field for great power competition? Is China’s involvement in the region an opportunity or challenge for Israel? How should Israel navigate China-US tensions to best serve its interests?
Points for consideration:
· China’s traditional NAM position moving to a more interest-based policy
· China’s increased involvement over the last 10 years and its implications for continued US regional dominance
· Energy and resources expanding via BRI growing focus on infrastructure and technology
· China’s balancing act (Iran, Arab countries, Israel)
· China-Iran-Saudi Arabia
Israel:
· Israel as a staunch US ally
· Traditionally China’s interests have been clearly aligned with the Arab side
· Israel, the Jewish state, is respected and even admired in China
· Growing Chinese need for technology especially as tensions grow with the US
· Israel increasingly caught between two superpowers
