For this week’s discussion forum, I used the term “Neonatal Sepsis” on Google and on Google Scholar. Above I included just the links for the first five searches of each search engine. For my search, in both search engines, I found my results to be credible and reliable, and mostly scholarly. I felt this may have been related to the use of the word “sepsis” which is a very medical, scientific term. Both search engines gave me links to articles mostly in medical journals. I did have one for the Merck Manual, which I would consider highly reliable, and for Medscape, which maybe is not so scholarly, and not a journal article. Those two were both on the regular Google search. All the search results on Google were current, from 2018-2022. On Google Scholar the results were from as far back as 1980 and 2005, up to 2016, 2017, and 2020. Typically, when doing research, it is best to use up-to-date and current references, unless the references are seminal works. According to the University of Washington library, to understand the reliability and credibility of articles, one must look at these 5 questions: Who the author is, the purpose of the content, where the content comes from, why does the source exist for this content, and how does this source compare to other sources (2022).
Both of these searches were internet searches, but when using search engines made for everyday people, it is important to remember that these search engines do not screen the information for credibility and reliability so a person must be able to analyze the information and resources provided (Gray & Grove, 2020).
