Short Video on Sun Tzu’s Art of War
Written about 500 BC (not known outside official Chinese bureaucratic channels until approx. 700 C when his teachings are read and disseminated in Japan).
Three key principles (from video):
1 “Know your enemy and know yourself and in 100 battles you will never be in peril.”
2 “To win 100 battles is not the height of skill; to subdue the enemy without fighting is.”
3 “Avoid what is strong. Attack what is weak.”
Other select principles as they relate to individuals and the state (from The Art of War):
1 “War is a matter of vital importance to the State; the province of life or death; the road to survival or ruin. It is mandatory that it be thoroughly studied.”
2 “If not in the interests of the state, do not act. If you cannot succeed, do not use troops. If you are not in danger, do not fight.”
3 “If wise, a commander is able to recognize changing circumstances and to act expediently. If sincere, his men will have no doubt of the certainty of rewards and punishments. If humane, he loves mankind, sympathizes with others, and appreciates their industry and toil. If courageous, he gains victory by seizing opportunity without hesitation.”
Questions to frame your Interpretive Essay:
1 Which of three key principles from the video do you think most important, whether personally or professionally and why?
2 How do Sun Tzu’s principles, whether the three from the video in red above AND/OR the selected three principles in green above, relate to your current degree program (or industry specialization) and how do they also relate to current society today (i.e. are they applicable in the present and why or merely rants from a dead man)?
FORMAT OF THE ESSAY: You will want to type this essay in a Word document (with a .doc or .docx file extension). Remember to include a formal title page, type it in Arial or New Times Roman font, 12 point, double-spaced, and include consecutively numbered pages as well. The length should be no longer than four (4) pages. Because of the interpretive nature of the assignment, you may use first person for this essay. In fact, for this assignment, I would ask that you avoid any outside source assistance. Rather, I am looking for you to write an essay based on your thought and reflection of the video and with the framing questions (in BLUE above) as a guide. The essay will be due the end of Week Three and should be uploaded into the Dropbox in P.L.A.T.O. NOTE: If you make use of any outside source support in your essay other than the YouTube video linked here (e.g. books, journal articles, etc.; and you are not required to access outside sources), you will want to include appropriate citation of the source(s). This essay will be worth 100 points or 10% of your total grade for the course.
