Explain your appropriated idea or message of your magazine cover and the meaning of your selected masthead/ti tle.

1. Select a well-known artist and design an appropriated magazine cover in a style which reflects your chosen
artist’s ideas, themes or
style. This assignment will further your understanding of the visual elements and
principles of design which become inherent in works
of art. (See study guide 1, parts 2 & 3)
2. Your cover design can be in a collage, photomontage, photograph(s), digital art, drawing or painting. It may use color paper, images and
text from magazines, your own photographs, color pencils, or various paints. You may also use Photoshop or Illustrator, yet this is
NOT a cut & paste of original works of art. (In Canvas, see past examples of this assignment showing acceptable and non-acceptable
appropriations.
3. A viewer should be able recognize your selected artist by their style, themes or ideas, yet be your original
message or meaning.
4. Your masthead/ti tle should be about the content and context of your magazine. The masthead can be more
than one to three words.
It can be in another language or a play on words.
5. Magazine cover should be at least 8x10in or 20x25cm in format with the entire surface covered. Choose a
typeface style(s) and font
sizes for your masthead and article cover lines. Suggest looking at magazine covers in
the periodical room in a library, on the Internet
or retail stores which carry magazines for ideas of layout, typeface, and cover lines, etc. View past student examples on the Canvas.
6. If you can, scan your cover, then add masthead/ti tle and cover lines using Photoshop or Illustrator. If not,
suggest printing the text
needed. Hand-written is acceptable, as long as it is neat and orderly, aiming to resemble
typed text.
7. You will also include a written paper with your magazine cover, which should include the following:
Brief, yet pertinent information about your chosen artist.
Add some interesting information about the particular artistic movement your artist was in association.
Explain your appropriated idea or message of your magazine cover and the meaning of your selected masthead/ti tle.
Describe why your design makes a great visual cover, such as which visual elements and/or principles of design were
utilized in your composition.
Include at the end of your written analysis, small image(s) of the work of art(s) appropriated from your selected artist.
For the written paper – Font size should not be larger than Times New Roman 12, if you are using a different font style. Margins are
standard – 1” top, bottom & sides. Don’t aim to make larger margins and less text. Better to have smaller margins and more text.
Written portion should be approximately 500-750+ words.
