Personal statements are often required when you apply to academic institutions, health career programs, scholarships and other awards. Writing a personal statement gives you an opportunity to support your fit for the career you’ve chosen and highlight what makes you stand out from other candidates.
This assignment connects to the student learning outcome develop an academic plan and success portfolio.

You will write a personal statement which answers the following questions:
Why do you want to become a/an _________________? (Fill in the blank with your top career choice.)
How will you meet the challenges of a/an______________ program.? (Fill in the blank with the academic program required for your career). Don’t explain the steps of the application process or the requirements of the program in your statement. Include logical connections between your career interest and your skills or attributes.
What will you contribute to the field of ____________ after you complete your education? (Fill in the blank with your top career choice).
You may discuss the following:
Your educational background—knowledge or experience gained
Your previous/current work or volunteer experience (if any)—accolades given or challenges overcome
Specific or unique attributes you could bring to the career
Your personal and professional goals
Your commitment to diversity, social justice, and being a local and global citizen
Anything else which makes you stand out from other applicants
Things to avoid in your personal statement
Discussing the financial benefits of the career
Discussing religion, politics, or controversial subjects
Anything which is not true
Clichés like “I’m a caring person” or “I like helping people”
Additional Rules for this assignment
Your personal statement must be at least 300 words but no longer than 500 words in length.
You will be creating a document in Microsoft Word.
Use 12-point font and spacing at 0 before, 8 after along with one inch margins.
Be sure to check grammar and spelling carefully.
Be sure to use paragraphs and include an introduction and conclusion paragraph.
You may take your personal statement to the Learning Lab if you would like help with editing.
