The two eras I am comparing, and contrasting are the Vietnam war (11/1955-04/1975) and World War 2 (1939-1945). Both eras of war had many similarities but also many differences. Some of the differences were that World War 2 was declared but Vietnam was not. Also, many Americans supported World War 2 but not so much the Vietnam war. Also, there was a difference in how the men were treated once they returned home. “One of the starkest contrasts in the popular imagination is between men who served in World War II and those who went to Vietnam”(Maclean,2016). In MacLean’s articles, it is evident that men and women who served in World War 2 , benefited from higher wages versus men and women who served in Vietnam. Also, in the same article, it suggested that men were excluded from serving if they had health problems as men who served in Vietnam, could still serve if they enrolled in higher education.(MacLeaan,2016). One of the main similarities is that the wars involved Americans.
2 competencies that apply to Vietnam War are Advance Human Rights and Social, Economic, and Environmental Justice. “Military social workers understand theories and models of oppression, discrimination, and social justice and aspects of combat, humanitarian, and peacekeeping missions exposing service members to human rights violations and environmental injustices”(CSWE,2015). Also, engage in Policy Practice as social workers must understand how the policy toward any given war or conflict. For example, World War II, Vietnam, Cold War, Afghanistan, and Iraq and how it affects service members’ military experience and their experience as veterans.
2 competencies for World War 2 are also engaged in policy practice. “Military social workers understand that definitions of military populations such as “veterans,” “military families,” and roles based on “discharge status” limit eligibility for services and support”(CSWE,2015). Also Engage with Individuals, Families, Groups, Organizations, and Communities. This is because social workers must be able to develop an understanding of one’s biases, knowledge, and learning needs about service members, veterans, and families for appropriate engagement(CSWE,2015).
