What is the association between the attributes of the stereotype and the attributes of the product?

Essay #2 PROMPT:
For your essay, choose one of the following:
View Jean Kilbourne’s video “Killing Us Softly (4)” and then write an essay on the use of sexist ads in magazines, billboards, TV, social media and/or other platforms. Choose an ad from the 1950s and one from today. What changes do you see since the 1950s? And what has not changed?

View Sut Jhally’s video “The Codes of Gender: Identity and Performance in Pop Culture” and then write an essay on the use of gender stereotypical ads in magazines, billboards, TV, social media and/or other platforms. Choose an ad from the 1950s and one from today. What changes do you see since the 1950s? And what has not changed?

Aim for about 1200 words; 2000 is too many and 1000 is probably too few. Use 12 pt. font and double-spacing (and 1-inch margins if submitting as a Word/Pages doc). You may copy the essay into the Canvas text editor or submit as a document. I’d like to see:
1) An introductory paragraph explaining what you are about to discuss;
2) Discussion, first of the historic ad and the sexism/gender stereotyping or racism inherent in it;
3) Then of the current ad and the same discussion of it;
4) Why do you think the admaker chose this particular stereotype for the advertising material? What is the association between the attributes of the stereotype and the attributes of the product? Finally, compare and contrast the images you found from the two groups. Describe any changes in the use of the stereotype, if any?
5) End with a brief summary/conclusion paragraph. That looks like about five paragraphs to me, but of course can be more. Also, you don’t have to follow this format rigidly in terms of discussing historical first and then modern and then comparing—you may compare the entire way—as long as you tick all of the boxes.
Make sure to include both ads in the essay, either in the body or at the end.
The ads should be related, e.g., a Maybelline ad from the 1950s and a current Maybelline ad. If you’re going to use different brands, make sure they are at least in the same category, e.g., a Budweiser ad from the 1950s and a current Coors Light ad.
You must use the documentary you chose as well as at least two other sources as references. I’m not as concerned with which citation style you use, just that you use one. I’m fine with “According to author X” and a page number, and then the full cite in a reference list at the end.
Ads do NOT count toward your sources unless they are part of a larger article that you use as a reference in the essay.
Rubric
Essay is worth 100 points. Essay should be well-written with minimal to no errors in spelling, mechanics and punctuation. Organization of the essay should be logical and linear (see suggested organization above). All five components detailed should be included, with emphasis on components two, three and four. The two ad images are required. References to the documentary and at least two other sources must be included, and in a manner in which I can track them down if necessary. Please note, including all required elements does not equal “A” work. Excellent, or “A,” work will also include analysis of both the past and present media and advertising relationship as well as an interesting, in-depth and/or innovative link between the two.
